Finnish-German partnering for joint innovation funding

Germany’s strong economy is built on its network of clusters that use their regional proximity to support each other and to innovate. The clusters of the German capital region highlight the most important industries:

Healthcare industries

The high concentration of university and non-university research institutes in Berlin that focus on the life sciences is unique. This includes internationally renowned institutions such as Charité – Europe's largest university clinic –, the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and the Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin. This gives companies outstanding opportunities to develop and cooperate with local medical research and other key areas such as information technology, nanotechnology, photonics and microsystems technologies.

ICT | Media | Creative Industries

The German capital region is a leading location for the digital economy, media representatives and creative minds. It offers the ideal circumstances to feed the development and distribution of new content and mobile applications in trendsetting sectors.

Transport | Mobility | Logistics

The capital region is traditionally known as a center of expertise for rail technology and with more than 100 companies – including Siemens, Bombardier and Stadler – it is one of the most important locations for the industry in Europe. As an international showcase for electromobility, the region is becoming an increasingly important location for automotive innovations.

Energy Technologies

The capital region is a leader in the development of smart grids, storage concepts and innovative solutions to synchronize energy supply and demand. Its distinctive industrial and research landscape as well as its excellent infrastructure make it the largest laboratory for the energy transition and urban environmental technologies in Germany.

Photonics

Photonics have a long tradition in the capital region: Siemens, Osram and AEG Berlin have been brightly illuminating the “City of Light” for more than 100 years. Since then, the field of photonics and microsystems technologies has undergone significant developments. In addition to traditional lighting technology, they are key component technologies of high-tech products – such as in the fields of medicine and communications technology.

Manufacturing Industries

The metal and electrical industry, as well as mechanical and plant engineering have a long tradition in Berlin. Together with the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, they are among the industries in the capital city with the strongest sales and employment numbers. The industrial location of Berlin also benefits from the strong local digital economy, which is advancing the digitization of production and control processes in a move towards industry 4.0.
